Almost Every Kitchen is Improved When They Have an Island

Kitchen islands are among the most under-rated and useful items that can be installed into a home. Islands can provide much needed versatile counter space into a kitchen. They can be used to prepare or store food. In many cases people add seating to an island and can use them as an easy kitchen table for quick light meals. Islands can have cooktops, sinks or utilities, making them even more functional! In some cases, islands can be lighter and portable while mostly being used for storage. What’s fun about a kitchen island is that while they have all these uses, they are also really nice to view. They can make a kitchen design really pop. When a person loves their home kitchen, they are more likely to cook for themselves and save money over ordering a lot of delivery. There’s a lot that can go into kitchen islands and it’s important to pick the right one for your kitchen.

Standard Kitchen Island Styles

The standard kitchen island tends to be a rectangular shaped island which features a single countertop. In most cases, there is cabinetry below the island or shelves. This can greatly increase the amount of storage available in a kitchen. There are a few variations of this island that people use. Some of these variations include:

  • Storage cabinet variant - This includes 100% cabinetry and drawers that should match the rest of the kitchen cabinets.
  • Contrasting island - Whereas the last version matches the cabinetry, this instead acts as a contrasting accent with different colors from the rest of the kitchen cabinets.
  • Galley kitchen island - This version of the kitchen island removes some cabinetry and replaces it with some stools or tall chairs. These can slide in and out and allow people to eat at the island. It should be noted the countertop is the same height across the whole island.
  • Shelf/Cabinet combos - These islands remove some cabinets for other styles of shelving. Sometimes a wine rack might be thrown in as well.

More Complicated Kitchen Island Styles

While the standard island is useful, there are a lot of things that can be done with a kitchen island toi make it look great. Some of these include:

  • Bi-Level Islands - This style of island features a two tier island. Why? Because one is intended for eating, while the lower tier is usually designed for prep work. The island tends to be fairly long and slim and the chairs that go with it will be very tall. This is a perfect kind of island for people who want to eat in the kitchen but don’t want to have an additional table outside of the dining room. Most types of countertops can be used, but they tend to avoid the highest end styles of counters.
  • Circular Island - This is a kitchen island which throws away the standard rectangular shape. It can be fully spherical, or in many cases may start as a rectangle with one half of it being circular. These can be very popular with seating to allow people to eat at them.
  • Waterfall Island - This design of kitchen island is good in modern kitchens as it takes the minimalist look to the maximum. Instead of the countertop ending at the edges, it then bends and moves straight down to the ground making it look like it’s gone over a waterfall. This can be a great look in white or very light kitchens.
